Texas Throw ‘Em

Texas Throw ‘Em is an 3D action game where the player plays as Ace, a wild west, card slinging criminal on the run from the law. Ace has just broken out of jail and is looking towards a shiney new casino in the town of Gunflats. Play as Ace and grab the money and go before being riddled with bullets in this cartoony card throwing shooter! Texas Throw ‘Em is currently my primary focus as my graduate capstone, along with three others using Unreal Engine 5.

The bounty hunters in our game help deliver one of the core tenants, to make it exhilarating. We want it so that once the bullets start flying, the player is making their great escape with the enemies on their trail.

To create the bounty hunters, I’m using the Unreal 5’s behavior trees to create the functionality. Along with that, I’m working on keeping optimization a priority as to keep the game’s performance up. We’ve had some slight issues with this in the past, so I’m trying to keep my code as quick as I can. I lock functionality by quick Boolean checks to measure the conditions to not evaluate branches unnecessarily.

As I iterate on the system, I create the deeper functionalities each sprint. One sprint might be focused on the combat behaviors while the other might be focused on the searching behaviors.
